Portwest FR503 Black Chemical Protection and Flame Retardant Coveralls
Ensuring worker safety in demanding work environments, the Portwest FR503 Black Chemical Protection and Flame Retardant Coveralls provide protection against a wide range of hazards including heat, flames, arc flash, and chemical splashes. Comfortable as it is protective, workers can also benefit from the breathable and stretchy fabric which allows for maximum freedom of movement whilst on the job.
What Can the Portwest FR503 Black Coveralls Offer?
The Portwest FR503 Black Coveralls have several features to ensure those who work in hazardous environments are kept safe, as well as comfortable. The following are a list of what the Portwest FR503 Coveralls can provide:
- Thermal Hazard Protection: The coveralls offer inherent protection against arc flashes, radiant, convective and contact heat, as well as shielding the wearer from welding related hazards such as splashes of molten metal
- Chemical Protection: The coveralls are also tested to provide protection against splashes of chemical products
- Anti-Static Properties: Carbon fibre content of the fabric confers inherent anti-static properties
- Visibility: Heat applied segmented reflective tape on the garment increases visibility of wearer in low light conditions
- Functionality: Two-way front zip provides quick and easy access to garment, knee pad pockets increase wearer comfort,10 pockets supply ample storage for essentials
- Mobility and Comfort: Stretch panelling in key movement areas and stretch crotch gusset ensures for full freedom and range of movement
The coveralls are constructed from the inherently flame resistant Portwest Modaflame 290gm fabric. Portwest's industry leading flame resistant range provides multi standard protection for hazardous environments.
How Durable are the Portwest FR503 Fire-Resistant Coveralls?
As well as being made of Portwest's Modaflame fabric, the Portwest FR503 coveralls are also made of 35% cotton, and are interwoven with 1% carbon fibres which provide excellent tear and tensile strength. Carbon fibres generally have excellent tensile properties, low densities, high thermal and chemical stabilities, good thermal and electrical conductivities, and excellent creep resistance.
Who Can Use the Portwest Heat Resistant Coveralls?
The Portwest coveralls are designed for use in environments where there is a risk of chemical splashes, flames, heat and welding-related hazards such as molten metal splashes. Thanks to its anti-static properties the coveralls are also suitable for settings where there is a risk of a build-up of static charge leading to an explosion or an electric shock.
Some suitable environments and professions to wear the Portwest FR503 include:
- Petrochemical refineries
- Sheet metal workers
- Mechanics
- Engineers
- Chemical engineers
- Assembly workers
- Electricians
- Construction

What Certifications Have the Portwest FR503 Coveralls Received?
The PortwesT FR503 Coveralls have been rigorously tested so that you can be certain of your absolute safety at work.
- EN 11612:
- A1: Limited flame spread
- A2: Limited flame spread, hemmed
- B1: Convective heat (scale 1 - 3)
- C1: Radiant heat (scale 1 - 4)
- F1: Contact heat (scale 1 - 3)
- EN ISO 11611:
- EN 1149:
- 5: Protects against electrostatic discharge in case of an explosion
- IEC 61482-2 IEC 61482-1-1 Elim 6.4 CAL/CM²
- IEC 61482-2 IEC 61482-1-2 APC 1

What Do These Certifications Mean?
- EN 11612: This standard determines whether a garment offers protection against heat and flames, and whether this protection extends to convective, radiant or contact heat
- EN 11611: This standard shows whether an item of clothing is suitable for welding or similar tasks and will protect the wearer from heat and metal splashes
- EN 1149-5: This standard demonstrates whether a garment protects against electrostatic discharge in environments such as petrochemical refineries where there is a risk of explosion
- IEC 61482-2: This is the overall standard covering protective clothing against thermal arc hazards and electric arc
- ASTM F1959: This standard determines the arc rating of a garment, which is the amount of energy needed to pass through the fabric to cause a second or third degree burn
- EN 13034: This standard specifies the requirements for protective clothing against splashes of chemical products
The Portwest FR503 coveralls have an ARC rating of 2, and will attenuate 75.8% of the heat resulting from an electric arc. Welding hazards have also been tested for, and the coveralls are certified as providing class 1 protection from such dangers. The coveralls will shield you from radiant, convective and contact heat, as well as splashes of chemical products.
